Presidents Day is a federal holiday, meaning that federal offices will be closed and some services will be unavailable on the day.

Banks, post offices, government offices and the stock market will be closed on Monday, Feb. 16. Grocery stores, restaurants and retail stores are more likely to be open.

Presidents Day, officially “Washington’s Birthday,” was the first holiday to be named after an individual president. It was established in 1879 to honor George Washington but has since expanded to celebrate all U.S. presidents.

The name Presidents Day became more widely recognized after a shift was created to observe a three-day weekend in 1968. Congress, however, never changed the name from “Washington’s Birthday” to Presidents Day under federal law.

Here’s a look at what’s open and closed on Presidents Day.

Will the post office be open on Presidents Day?

U.S. Postal Service post offices will be closed on Monday, Feb. 16 and mail will not be delivered. USPS offices will reopen on Feb. 17.

Are UPS, FedEx operating on Presidents Day?

UPS pickup and delivery services are available on Presidents Day, according to the company’s website. Stores are also open.

UPS Ground Saver and UPS Mail Innovations deliveries will require one additional business day in transit due to the federal holiday.

FedEx services will mostly be available. U.S. and international package and express freight services will operate on a modified schedule.

Are banks open on Presidents Day?

Bank branches close on federal holidays, meaning branches of Capital One, Bank of America, Wells Fargo, PNC, Chase, Truist and CitiBank will be closed on the day.

Is the stock market open?

The stock market will be closed to observe Presidents Day.

The Nasdaq, New York Stock Exchange and U.S. bond markets will be closed on Monday, Feb. 16, in observance of the holiday.

Are schools closed on Presidents Day?

Most public schools will be closed to observe Presidents Day but parents should check with their school districts. While many universities close on the holiday, it’s not a universal policy and students should check their institutions to confirm.

Are grocery stores and other retailers closed on Presidents Day?

National grocery stores will be open on the holiday but shoppers should double check their local businesses.

Walmart, Aldi, Target, Whole Foods and Costco will be operating during regular business hours.
