Is It Possible To Save Money Buying Gas at Costco?

While the cost of fuel is relatively stable, it settled out far higher than most people would like. As a result, many households are looking for opportunities to reduce the cost of operating their vehicle, and some are wondering if Costco gas prices could be the answer. If you’re curious about Costco gas prices, here’s what you need to know.

Are Costco Gas Prices Cheaper?

Typically, Costco gas prices are cheaper than the average cost of fuel within the store’s operating area. Costco is able to offer lower fuel prices because of its broader operating model. A Costco membership is required, and the membership fees help Costco keep various prices down. Plus, since membership is necessary, it effectively encourages people to head into Costco for other items, which allows the company to maintain a solid profit margin, even while offering fantastic discounts.

However, that doesn’t mean that Costco is guaranteed to have the lowest fuel prices around. While they typically beat the price listed at the pump available elsewhere, there may be other discount stations that have even better pricing. Additionally, some fuel stations have rewards programs – either directly or in partnership with a retailer, like a grocery store chain – that can bring the price of gas down significantly.

As a result, while Costco is a good option, it’s critical to explore alternatives in your area. Also, factor in rewards point programs or similar discount options, as those could allow you to get an even better deal.

Is Costco Gas Worth the Price of Membership?

If you’re only interested in taking advantage of the low Costco gas prices and don’t plan to shop in the warehouse store, too, paying for the membership could lead to a net gain. However, you’ll need to do a little math to make sure that applies to you.

You’ll need to calculate how much fuel you typically use during a year. Then, determine how much cheaper Costco gas is per gallon compared to the next cheapest fuel station. Multiply that savings based on the number of gallons you need per year. Finally, see if the amount you’d saved exceeds the cost of the Costco membership. If so, paying for the membership could be worthwhile.

However, you do need to factor in one more thing: whether going to Costco is out of your way. If heading to the Costco gas station means using more fuel or spending a lot of extra time to fuel up, then more significant savings might be necessary to offset that.

Still, those simple calculations can make figuring out whether it’s something you should consider easier. So, make sure to do the math to see if you’ll get enough savings, especially if you’re only using the membership for fuel.

If you’d like to take advantage of the low-cost gas at Costco, make sure to get a Costco membership. Joining only takes a few minutes, and it ensures you have everything you need in place to save big on fuel and everything else Costco has to offer.

Do the Costco gas prices make it your preferred place to fill up, or do you head somewhere else to get the best deal on fuel for your car? Do you think that the lower gas prices make a Costco membership worthwhile, even if you don’t shop in the store? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
