Coca-Cola. Apple. Billions of dollars in the bank.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s one version of a moat. But what about you?<\/p>\n<p>Early in my career, my moat wasn\u2019t complicated. It was hustle. My moat was showing up when other people didn\u2019t. It was answering calls at midnight. It was knocking on doors while everyone else was still \u201cplanning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That moat of relentless effort gave me a reputation before I had a brand. People remembered that I showed up. That was enough to start stacking bricks, one on top of the other.<\/p>\n<p>Your moat doesn\u2019t have to be complicated. It has to be yours.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A business without a moat<\/h2>\n<p>I\u2019ve seen this story play out too many times. A founder has a great idea. Maybe even a great product. For a while, things go well. Then a competitor shows up with the same idea, a louder megaphone and a bigger network. Suddenly, the first founder is out of business.<\/p>\n<p>Why? No moat.<\/p>\n<p>Ideas are cheap. Execution is everywhere. Without a moat, you\u2019re just another castle waiting to be raided.<\/p>\n<p><b>Related: 5 Ways to Succeed in a Competitive Market<\/b><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What moats look like<\/h2>\n<p>Your moat might be:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><b>Grit.<\/b> Refusing to quit when everyone else does.<\/li>\n<li><b>Focus.<\/b> Doing one thing better than anyone else.<\/li>\n<li><b>Relationships.<\/b> A community that trusts you so much they\u2019ll never leave.<\/li>\n<li><b>Speed.<\/b> Moving faster than your competition over and over again.<\/li>\n<li><b>Culture.<\/b> A way of operating that competitors can\u2019t copy.<\/li>\n<li><b>Distribution: <\/b>The channels you control that competitors can\u2019t touch.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It doesn\u2019t matter what form it takes. What matters is that it protects you.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Moats require sacrifice<\/h2>\n<p>Here\u2019s the hard part. Moats don\u2019t build themselves. They take sacrifice.<\/p>\n<p>You can\u2019t build a moat by trying to be everything to everyone. You can\u2019t build a moat by chasing every shiny opportunity.<\/p>\n<p>A moat requires saying no. It requires focus. It requires protecting the thing that actually sets you apart, even when it\u2019s tempting to spread yourself thin.<\/p>\n<p>If you stand for everything, you stand for nothing. And nothing is not a moat. When I started out, my moat was hustle. Now, years later, my moat looks different.<\/p>\n<p>Today, it\u2019s more than that. It\u2019s the reputation of consistency. It\u2019s the relationships that span decades. My moat expanded, but the principle stayed the same. Build something that protects your livelihood.<\/p>\n<p>Your moat will change, too. Early on, it might be grit. Later, it might be technology, partnerships or brand.
