U.S. stock-index futures surged higher Sunday night, after Congress narrowly avoided a government shutdown on Saturday.<\/p>\n

Dow Jones Industrial Average futures
\n YM00,
\n
\n rallied about 200 points, or 0.6% late Sunday. S&P 500 futures
\n ES00,
\n +0.03%<\/bg-quote>
\n and Nasdaq-100 futures
\n NQ00,
\n +0.05%<\/bg-quote>
\n also gained.<\/p>\n

On Saturday night, Congress approved a 45-day, bipartisan stopgap spending bill, which averted a shutdown \u2014 for now, at least \u2014 and put House Speaker Kevin McCarthy\u2019s job at risk. Republican Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida said Sunday he would seek to remove McCarthy from his leadership position for breaching agreements he made with hardline Republicans. \u201cBring it on,\u201d McCarthy, a California Republican, said in response.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith one of the potholes in Q4 economic growth seemingly filled temporarily, investors initially responded with a sense of relief,\u201d Stephen Innes, managing partner of SPI Asset Management, wrote in a note Sunday.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs policymakers kick the can down the road, it might nudge yields slightly higher as markets shift their focus away from the negative economic implications of a government shutdown to the hawkish Fed,\u201d Innes continued, adding that a budget resolution appears more likely, \u201cgiven the proximity of the new deadline to the holiday season.\u201d<\/p>\n

Last week, Wall Street closed out a miserable month, with the S&P 500
\n SPX
\n posting its worst monthly loss of the year, down nearly 5%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average
\n DJIA
\n and Nasdaq Composite
\n COMP
\n also ended down for the month.<\/p>\n
