{"id":23263,"date":"2023-09-29T18:58:12","date_gmt":"2023-09-29T18:58:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/microloannexus.com\/news\/ford-ceo-says-uaw-is-holding-the-deal-hostage-over-ev-battery-plants\/"},"modified":"2023-09-29T18:58:14","modified_gmt":"2023-09-29T18:58:14","slug":"ford-ceo-says-uaw-is-holding-the-deal-hostage-over-ev-battery-plants","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/microloannexus.com\/?p=23263","title":{"rendered":"Ford CEO says UAW is &#8216;holding the deal hostage&#8217; over EV battery plants"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"RegularArticle-ArticleBody-6\" data-module=\"ArticleBody\" data-test=\"articleBody-2\" data-analytics=\"RegularArticle-articleBody-6-2\"><span class=\"HighlightShare-hidden\" style=\"top:0;left:0\"><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>DETROIT \u2013 The United Auto Workers union is holding up negotiations with <span class=\"QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer\" data-test=\"QuoteInBody\" id=\"RegularArticle-QuoteInBody-1\">Ford Motor<span class=\"QuoteInBody-inlineButton\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer\" id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\" data-analytics-id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\"><button class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton\" aria-label=\"Add To Watchlist\" data-testid=\"dropdown-btn\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag\"><\/span><\/button><\/span><\/span><\/span> over future electric vehicle battery plants, Ford CEO Jim Farley said during a press briefing Friday.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I believe we could have reached a compromise on pay and benefits but so far the UAW is holding the deal hostage over battery plants,&#8221; he said Friday after the UAW announced it would expand strikes to two additional assembly plants \u2014 one each for Ford and <span class=\"QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer\" data-test=\"QuoteInBody\" id=\"RegularArticle-QuoteInBody-3\">General Motors.<span class=\"QuoteInBody-inlineButton\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer\" id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\" data-analytics-id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\"><button class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton\" aria-label=\"Add To Watchlist\" data-testid=\"dropdown-btn\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag\"><\/span><\/button><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Farley criticized the union for its targeted strike strategy, saying he feels the actions were &#8220;premediated&#8221; and insinuating the union was never interested in reaching a deal before a Sept. 14 deadline.<\/p>\n<p>Multibillion-dollar EV battery plants \u2014 and their thousands of expected workers \u2014 are crucial to the automotive industry&#8217;s future and uniquely positioned to have wide-ranging implications for the UAW, automakers and President Joe Biden&#8217;s push toward domestic manufacturing.<\/p>\n<p>Current and former union leaders previously told CNBC that the battery plants will have to be a priority for the labor organization, regardless of whether they&#8217;re directly discussed in the national agreement, for the long-term viability of the union.<\/p>\n<p>However, they&#8217;re considered a &#8220;wild card&#8221; issue in the contract negotiations. Many of the battery plants that have been announced cannot legally be included in the current talks, as they are joint venture facilities.<\/p>\n<p>Ford has announced four future battery plants, including three joint ventures and a wholly owned subsidiary using battery technology licensed from Chinese auto supplier CATL. Ford earlier this week paused construction on the latter plant in Marshall, Michigan, due to the union negotiations, Farley said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We can make Marshall a lot bigger or a lot smaller,&#8221;
