When it comes to stuff I think about, here\u2019s a short list:<\/p>\n

Why can\u2019t I get a decent piece of pizza in New York City anymore? (I blame the dollar-slice industry.)\u00a0<\/p>\n

Which Andrew Lloyd Webber musical is his crowning achievement? (I\u2019ve become convinced it\u2019s \u201cEvita,\u201d not \u201cPhantom of the Opera\u201d or \u201cCats.\u201d)<\/p>\n

\n

And will the Miami Marlins \u2014 my favorite baseball team \u2014 defy the odds and win a wild-card spot this season? (I\u2019m taking bets it\u2019s going to happen.)<\/p>\n

But notice I didn\u2019t mention anything about the Roman Empire.\u00a0<\/p>\n

If you\u2019re a little confused about this Roman business, you\u2019re likely not aware of the latest viral trend. Namely, a discussion about how men can\u2019t stop thinking about that bygone era when Nero, Augustus and the like ruled the world \u2014 or at least a significant portion of it.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The subject has spawned many a social-media thread. It\u2019s also been discussed by the New York Times and Washington Post.\u00a0<\/p>\n

And naturally, it led to my wife of 32 years asking me: \u201cSo, how often do you think about the Roman Empire?\u201d As if she didn\u2019t already know my real obsessions? I just nearly extended our upcoming Washington, D.C., vacation to see a buzzy new production of \u201cEvita.\u201d<\/p>\n

Of course, there\u2019s probably some truth to the notion that men think a lot about the ancient Roman state. It certainly fits the alpha-male fixation with power and authority. As in, us guys are just a bunch of wannabe gladiators, looking for our opportunity to brandish a weapon and defeat the enemy.\u00a0<\/p>\n

At the very least, we do know that men have obsessions that are less likely to be shared by women. We spend more on electronics and booze. We\u2019re far bigger fans of professional football, which some might argue is just another version of the gladiator games.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

But here\u2019s the problem: What\u2019s true in general is not necessarily true in particular. And to think all men fit a certain profile \u2014 specifically, the alpha-male profile \u2014 is to think that masculinity must adhere to a frankly outdated model.<\/p>\n

We\u2019re living in an era when we\u2019re constantly redefining gender roles, if not the very idea of gender itself. Stereotypes may be rooted in certain realities, but those realities change over time.<\/p>\n

Craig Agranoff, a Florida-based marketing guru, told me that companies still play by some of the old rules of what speaks to men, but they also know they\u2019ve got to expand that definition. Or as Agranoff said, \u201cIt\u2019s now OK for a man to want to have soft sheets to sleep on.\u201d<\/p>\n

The problem with playing the gender stereotyping game is that it limits us all. And in limiting ourselves, we close doors to \u201cotherness\u201d at best and create divisions that cause real pain and problems at worst. It\u2019s such stereotyping that arguably leads to the gender pay gap that continues to plague the workforce, for example.\u00a0<\/p>\n

So, what about my list of obsessions? One could argue that baseball is a \u201cguy\u201d thing. Maybe pizza, too. And Broadway musicals? Perhaps not so much by traditional standards, but most of my male friends can talk theater all day. The point is, we don\u2019t all fit neatly into the boxes that society suggests.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Which is why I threw the question back to my wife: \u201cHow often do you think about the Roman Empire?\u201d It turns out she knew her emperors far more than I did.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
